Volunteer and Make a Difference!
We need volunteers! YOU can help save lives - whether you can dedicate just a few hours each month to walk and play with a dog or comfort a cat, help potential adopters find the perfect pet, or would like to help us with special events, gathering donations of supplies and helping to raise awareness to the needs of companion animals in our city.
No help is too small and all volunteer opportunities are very flexible. You might want to join our Dog Walkers or the wonderful volunteers who take the photos that get our animals noticed on Petfinder and other adoption sites!
Learn more about the new shelter and volunteer opportunities in this YouTube video: VB Animal Shelter by Steve Fedryk. (Note: YouTube has an ad on this video which you can skip.)
Would you like to learn about volunteering at the shelter? Join us Saturday Sept. 14th & Sunday Sept. 29th for Adult Volunteer Orientation @ the shelter from 10:30am - 1:30pm in the staff training room. New adult volunteers please contact Jean Deliz, volunteer coordinator, 757-404-8069 to register for orientation. Instructions for volunteer applications are listed below.
SPECIAL NOTE ON YOUTH VOLUNTEERS:
If you have a child 13-17 that wants to volunteer and handle the animals, please go to the VB Animal Care & Adoption Center on 341 S. Birdneck Rd to pick up a youth volunteer application – it’s a different application and orientation process.
Are you afraid of a long-term pet commitment but miss having a furry friend in your life? Are you in the military and worried about short notice deployments that would keep you from owning a pet? Try fostering!
The Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center needs volunteers to provide short-term in-home care for friendly dogs, cats, or other animals in need until they are adopted. The length of fostering can vary from a few days to several months. The Animal Care and Adoption Center will help you get started and ALL veterinary care is provided by our staff veterinarian!
If fostering sounds like it might be a perfect solution to your commitment worries, please contact Pat Wise email@example.com and request a foster application. Military Members are strongly encouraged to apply!
Friends of VBACAC is looking for some reliable, kind cat lovers to help with our South Plaza Petsmart Cat Adoption Corner! Only a few hours a month will help enormously. Interested? Click: I'd Like to Volunteer at the PetSmart Cat Corner!
Friends of Virginia Beach Animal Control has accomplished a lot of great things in a short time. We are attempting to make every effort to assist our municipal shelter in any way we possibly can to improve every facet of their operations. It is our compassionate and hard working volunteers that make this possible! There are also opportunities for teens to become Youth Volunteers - see the special form link below.
The shelter is a city facility and all volunteers have to complete the city volunteer process before volunteering at the shelter.
Please note: The criminal background form (Criminal Record Information Request) must now be notarized. Most banks now notarize at no charge for account holders.
or to: Jean Deliz, Volunteer Coordinator, Virginia Beach Animal Care & Adoption Center, 341 S. Birdneck Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23451.
You can also take your completed forms to either location.
We recommend checking back with Michelle Ferranti at 757-385-4970 in about a week to make sure that your paperwork is being processed. Once your paperwork is complete, you will be contacted by Jean Deliz to attend the next volunteer orientation. And please email us, by clicking I've Signed Up! , to let us know you have submitted your paperwork!
