VBAC&AC Adoption Requirements:

Animals that are impounded at the Bureau of Animal Care and Adoption Center are held for a minimum of 5 days commencing on the first day after impoundment. Animals without a collar are held for 5 days, animals with a collar are held for 10 days.  This allows time for owners to find and reclaim a lost pet.

Dogs and cats are available for adoption if not first claimed byBird Breath - Adopt Us their rightful owner. Sterilization of a dog or cat adopted from the Virginia Beach Bureau of Animal Control is required under Virginia State Code 3.1-796.126:1

New: Dogs are now kept in the INTAKE WING for 14 days. After the INTAKE PERIOD, a dog will be available for adoption immediately "first come, first serve" basis.

The INTAKE WING has dogs that have recently been impounded.  On day one at the shelter, each dog will be receiving an exam and vaccines.  They will remain in the intake area for 14 days; on day 14 they will receive a vaccine booster to ensure their protection against the parvo virus.  Once they receive their booster vaccine, they will be moved to the ADOPTION WING.  The purpose of this new procedure is to ensure that dogs new to the shelter are isolated for the incubation period of the parvo virus (10-14days) so we can have confidence in their health.

Adoption Procedures:

A person interested in adopting a pet  before they are released to the adoption wing may have their name placed on the waiting list for that animal. The policy at Animal Care is that you must be physically at the shelter to have your name placed on the list.
